Best practice in managing volunteers

Good volunteer recruitment and management not only increases your organisations capacity and impact, but also ensures that the time you give to supporting volunteers makes a real difference to their skills and confidence. Led by Volunteer Centre Hackney, this session will introduce you to the key areas of volunteer management, policies, recruitment and support in order to develop a programme that really works for your organisation and your volunteers.

The session will cover:

  • Recruiting and retaining the right volunteers
  • Supporting and managing volunteers
  • Creating a volunteer policy and volunteer agreement
  • Writing role descriptions
  • Essential policies and procedures including induction, Health & Safety, insurance and legal obligations
  • Recognising and rewarding volunteers


Learning outcomes:

By the end of the session participants will:

  • have gained knowledge of the key elements of good volunteer management
  • have gained knowledge of all the processes, policies and procedures that are essential to deliver an effective volunteer programme
  • have an understanding of what contributes to a volunteer’s sense of wellbeing in his/her role, and the ways in which they can be supported, recognised and valued
  • have created or revised their volunteer roles, and have the knowledge to set up their organisation and roles on Volunteer Connect
